| Title | Nong Tong paw |
Found in the manuscript of William Calvert of Harmby, Wesleydale (1805-12) According to Bob Ellis's book "There was none of this Lazy Dancing" this is the tune for a song entitled "mounseer NontonPaw" which in turn is a corruption of "Monsieur, je vous n'entends pas" (Sir, I don't understand you) and lampoons the inability of many Englishmen to understand French. The tune is in the ms. with one sharp in the key signature, but makes more sense in D (two sharps) and the missing sharp is believed to have been simply a notation mistake. | |
