Title | The Mermaid |
Collected by Cecil Sharp from Sister Emma of Clewer, Berkshire, 27 February 1909. Sister Emma was an Anglican nun who set up a home for abandoned boys in Clewer and ensured they had a decent upbringing and were sent to a respectable trade when they were old enough. Many were sent to sea. I like to think that she used to sing this version of the song to reassure them, in contrast to most other versions in which the ship sinks and all are lost.
