Title | The Cottage by the Wood (a.k.a.Forty Miles) |
As sung to Ralph Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth by Mr Charles Newby of Reydon Almshouses, Suffolk on October 25th 1910. He had been a coal merchant and pub landlord (The White Horse. Southwold). They called it Forty Miles as that is the generic title for songs with this story. The song has been found frequently in other parts of England , but rarely in East Anglia. It is a good song for a pub session as it has a repeated line for joining in with.
